Well, there's also the public relations aspect to consider. If the NFL (or individual teams) think he is too toxic to put out on the field for fear of fan backlash or sponsor boycotting then they may just release him for someone else to sign and deal with the repercussions.
Child abuse (actual or perceived) is a hot button issue right now. Not unlike racism. Remember the public outcry and fear of backlash that drove the Los Angeles Clippers' owner to be banned from the NBA for his comments, even though they never even approached criminality, to my knowledge.
I'm not saying the two incidents are identical, but the same principle that keeps one individual from participating in a sports league, fair or unfair, may also prevent another. If someone is deemed to be too "toxic" then they might just find themselves without a team.
