Not being political at all here, just tossing this article out 'cause the company I worked for built this set....right outside my office...in late 2008, installed early 2009.
There hadn't been young kids at the White House for years and Michelle wanted her girls to have swings. She also wanted to find a manufacturer where the swings would be made in America.
She found Rainbow Play Systems. They thought they bought a $3,000 set but it was probably worth 10 times that because the wood used was immaculate (all clear redwood the owner had had set aside for years) and everything was hand sanded, etc. If a board wasn't perfect, it was remade.
I chuckle that the article says the set is 'dark wood'. I guarantee you it's all redwood heartwood, lightly stained, and weathered.
Sadly, 2009 started with the company giving Michelle her made in America swing set and just a few months later the 1st of 4 layoffs began, end result being some 250 of 400 employees were laid off, with much of the work they'd done having been contracted to be done in China.
