This was before HD, so don't know if it's different now. Hope that helps.
On a personal note, just switched to Direct from Dish. So much better! The same tv at a cheaper price doesn't mean the same channels. Went down a tier with Direct and get basically the same channels.
My parents do this...

Got DirecTV for their residence in town and purchased an extra reciever at the time of the install. <- important, because of less hassles later. Then we just got an old DirecTV dish from someone that no longer had DTV and installed that at the lake home, took the extra receiver up there and have one television bill for satellite television for both places at no extra charge.

I have relatives that have an extra dish on their RV and as they vacation they are able to watch DirecTV anywhere they go and yet their bill is the same every month, which includes their residential service as well.

The key is to not tell DirecTV that you want television at two separate locations. You will need to make sure the receiver is paid and active, as well as install the dish, that you plan to use at your "second" location. If you let DirecTV know that is what you are doing or planning to do, they will increase your rates...and really for no reason other than they can.
