Do you guys remember when the Patriot Act was passed and the people who defended such actions were (very fallaciously) advocating that "if you dont do anything wrong you dont have to worry about it"? I wonder what those peoples opinions are of it now

Not just Verizon, it gets renewed every three months, and has been going on for seven years.

Some "information" was released today about the Verizon data collecting:
—The program is conducted under authority granted by Congress and is authorized by the Foreign intelligence Surveillance Court which determines the legality of the program. (Of course...our "outraged" congressional leaders have signed on and approved this.) —The government is prohibited from "indiscriminately sifting" through the data acquired. It can only be reviewed "when there is a reasonable suspicion, based on specific facts, that the particular basis for the query is associated with a foreign terrorist organization." He also said only counterterrorism personnel trained in the program may access the records. (Complete lie - "indscriminately" means every piece of data will be reviewed) —The information acquired is overseen by the Justice Department and the FISA court. Only a very small fraction of the records are ever reviewed, he said. (Another lie...they will collect and save all this info and if any/all of it is to be "reviewed" later for whatever reason, it will be) —The program is reviewed every 90 days. (Yep, it is reviewed and likely expanded every 90 days because they aren't getting enough "dirt" on all the criminals (criminals=you and I) in this country. Full story here. |

AOL Inc., Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., Google Inc., Microsoft Corp., Yahoo Inc., Skype, YouTube and Paltalk. I wouldn't be surprised if both the Dems and Repubs are colluding to get this data to help them better target donors, sway voters and squelch/punish any 3rd party supporters. |

I find the coverage of this story very interesting...
At first, the media was on board with the sentiment that this is an outrage and how can our government dare spy on us! But now I am hearing more of the "This guy is a criminal and needs to be brought to justice. Of course the government is spying on us because it is for our own good. If you got nothing to hide, you got nothing to fear." Type of thoughts from the mainstream press. Most of the media is now in lockstep with whatever the government wants to do...and it seems as if the people of this country don't mind. |
