Did Wilt Chamberlain really score 100 points in one game?
This is just almost unimaginable to me.
And just to show how times have changed in the last 47 years the game was not even on television. I wonder if ESPN was around back then what their coverage would have been like. They would have probably devoted a whole Sportscenter to this game. Well maybe not that would be a little hard without some video highlights right ESPN? Story Here Is there an NBA player from today that could even be compared to what Wilt did throughout his brilliant career?

yes he did Peter.....against the Knicks in 1962 in Hershey Park, Pa.
Then final score of that game was 169-147. Wilt the Stilt played for the Philladelphia Warriors at the time. The curious thing was the game never finsihed (according to some there were 46 sec left)....fans went apeshiznit and rushed the court after the 100th point was scored.

I was sort of just curious if people even remember the game. And I was reading somewhere else that at the time people did talk about it but nothing like ESPN would have done if Kobe would have scored 101 points in the game jpf25 mentioned.
I seem to remember that Kobe did not play about eight minutes in that game or so. I doubt Kobe could have scored 20 points in about eight minutes but anything is possible of course. Wilt proved that 47 years ago today.

I guess it's possible but my bet would be that the opposing team would beat the living shiznit out of the player that was trying to do that agaisnt them. The Knicks tried to foul everyone else in that game so Wilt wouldn't get to score.,....but it obviously did not work. The difference is that wilt was 7'1" and somewhere close to 300 lbs (shaqesque as the ESPN commercial mentions) and there were few in the game at that time that come close to defending him. Even Shaq gets player after player thrown at him defensively now. Kobe would get stuffed into the floor if he was getting close to 100.

Wilt was a man among boys in those days.....or maybe a redwood among cedars....
Back then, 7 footers were rarities......now there's 2 on every team. I'll bet if you averaged the length of all his shots that night (counting dunks as 0), it was less than 2 feet. ....excluding underhanded free throws of course!

Granted, there were no three pointers, but there are also more rules in today's game. There are 3 second violations (both offense and defensive). The shot clock completely changes the game, it slows down the tempo of the game much more than it was before. There are set plays and full usage of the clock. I don't think I could see Wilt scoring 100 points in today's game, but Kobe could've easily netted 100 in those days.

Kobe 20 points in 8 minutes

So, I'm thinking that Kobe could score 20 in 8 minutes. |

The shot clock has sped the game up, not slowed it down.

Didn't scores used to be in the high 100's?

Not sure, but even if they were, is has zero correlation to the shot clock be implemented. My knowledge, of course comes from my grandfather, who [as a coach] anyway hated how it took away from the strategy of the game.
