Default The U.S Open

My 2nd favorite tournament of the year. This year, being held at Bethpage - Black course in Farmingdale, N.Y. ( A State Park on Long Island).Yes, a State Park that anyone (if able to ever get a Tee time) can play. I can tell you that there is quite the sign there that says (not verbatum) this course is for serious golfers only.

Over 20% of all U.S. Opens have been held around NYC, for a good reason. The fans come out in droves-serious golf fans....and the players love it...they love loud cheering for special shots. I remember 7 (or so) years ago the crowds gave GARSE fits. That's when he was in his "regripping phase"...regripping his club 20-30 times before pulling the trigger. They would count out loud by number his "regrips" ...he almost left the course.

Tiger won that year...being the only golfer under par. This course is brutal people...over 7400+ yards with some very small sloping greens. The doglegs are sharp and the fairways are lined with big mature trees. Bunkers are deep...and as I mentioned....to very sloping greens.

Scuttlebut has it that they will "graduate the rough" this time...which will bring many more players into the mix. Instead of the normal gnarly 5"-6" rough...it'll get deeper gradually the farther off the fairway you are. Guys like Tiger and the other long knockers can let the shaft out a bit and not have to worry if they're only a few feet off the fairway that they'll have to hack out a wedge back in play. Now they'll be able to hit longer shots to those tough greens....but at least they'll be rewarded for fantastic shots.

Winners share is over a million.

15 amateurs in this year.

The field:
Robert Allenby
Stephen Ames
Stuart Appleby
Briny Baird

Thank you rich.

Sounds like a ton of fun for the golfers.

Nasty rough and it gets worse the farther away it is from the fairway, a long golf course, and some very small greens that have some serious sloping action.

Are you sure you are not describing Winged foot?

Thanks Rich

And P more or less echoed my thoughts on play this week. It'll be amazing to me if someone finishes under par for the tourney. Speaking of P, thanks to him as well

Your welcome -mmm-.

I just described almost any of the U.S. Open courses.

I forgot to mention the deep bunkers and huge trees that could get in the way of a shot onto the lightning fast greens.

Just some of the reasons why we may not see a lot of low scores this week.

How appropriate that Rich's first pic would include water. From what I understand there will be plenty of it falling from the sky this weekend.

Well at least they got the 3rd round in and should get a start on the 4th round today.

Ricky Barnes is quite the story. He won the 2002 US Amateur in a playoff over MAHHU, and he had the top amateur score at Augusta in 2003 (finishing 21st overall). His top finish otherwise on the tour is a 47th at last weeks St. Jude. And if he somehow wins? On top of the , he can play in the US Open for the next 10 years; the Masters, the British Open, the PGA championship and The Players Championship for the next 5 years; and throw in a 5 year exemption on his tour card. And that wouldnt be too shabby for a guy who fought through sectional play to get into this.
