McIlroy...are you kidding me
that impetuous youngster's stubborness just possibly cost himself the tournament on the first day...but more importantly...possibly some injury time off with possible surgery. Why on earth would you try to hit a ball up against a root?

no way Nick. It was the 3rd hole of the day. What is incredible to me is that 2 holes later he starts a birdie run (2 in a row) and he easily could've made the 3rd. Unbelieveable that he seems ok.....for now.

It's called youth and I think most of us would have done the same thing at that age. I was invincible well into my 20's. Rory also did not have the benefit of hearing McCord, Ferhety and the other announcers saying how he should have not taken that shot. We won't know until later as what his caddie was advising.
All is ok as he was told he will not further injure it. He might be in pain the rest of the week, but he is still hitting some great shots. His short game may be affected with the lack of feel in that right wrist. Funny thing is that when his round is over he should turn in his scorecard and get attention on the wrist immediately, but those on course announcers who are so concerned about Rory's well being will be wanting him for an interview or two before he can get treatment. I see he has his wrist wrapped up. What's allowed with that. I know with the way my clubface sometimes opens up at impact, if I had my wrist wrapped very tight, I could prevent some of those. |

it was not the fact that he played the shot....my issue was with how he played it.No good could come from a fullbore swing there and the discretion he has shown elsewhere in other situations tells me he should have listened to his caddy who suggested he belly a wedge outta there
I remember when I was 22....but I never played golf until my late 30's. I'm pretty sure I would not have risked inevitable injury for the sake of pulling off an impossible shot in an impossible situation....just my opinion.

I knew what you meant and Rory had to invision a shot by playing it that way. I know Tiger in his 20's would have played it the same way and probably pulled it off. THey are thinking what is the best way to advance this ball forward. We al know they HATE hitting out sideways to back on the fairway.
You and I thought it was an impossible shot, but a top player in the world who is also veyr creative sees a positive outcome in his attempt. Rory has another awesome lie. What will he do this time? lol He advanced it nicely but took a lot less off with his swing. |

And they have been wrong before, then when the player hits the shot they are truly amazed. These young golfers have many more shots than these announcers ever had when they were at the top of their game. These are the same announcers who when they played always had 4-6 holes in every round were they "would never" shoot for the pin. This generation will shoot for any and every pin. It's a way different mentality of these 35 and under golfers, sort of started with Tiger when he came into the PGA. Like I said, he saw the shot, had the vision so he made the right choice for him. Rory has more talent than any of those announcers ever had, so just like us maybe these announcers thought it was impossible, but Rory thought different. yes, it was a very low low low percentage shot with not even that much of a reward, but he tried and so be it. There is no such thing as "nobody" being able to pull off a shot anymore. |

and with possible career stalling or ending injury...you still think it was a good idea? We're not talking about a shot with possible scoring consequences..we're taking about serious injury.
I'm not buying that the older guys did not have the shots the younger guys do. That's hogwash.

Yeah, it was the wrong decision, but with his age and zest for the game, I see were he was coming from.
I don't know, I've heard too many old time greats be truly amazed at what shots these kids can pull of today. Grant it that technology has a great deal to do with it. |
