"And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are; for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets that they may be seen of men. Verily, I say unto you, They have their reward. But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou has shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly..." Matthew 6:5-6, King James Version.

Taking things out of context really does make it appear as something it isn't, eh?

The first part of that verse refers to the Jews that used to pray on the street corners at 09:00am and 03:00pm every day. Notice Jesus says 'They have their reward.'

The second part is referring to "relational" praying, or praying to grow your relationship with God. This is the prayer that is almost meditation-like, and it should be done in private.

Where are we going now that religion and references to god is being removed from public places and schools? Well, let's look at where we were when prayer was permitted in schools and courthouses...

Segregation was still openly practiced and prevalent in many states up until the 1960's. The KKK was a viable and well attended organization that used the bible and christian "morals" as justification for persecuting minorities. Women were openly treated poorly and underpaid in the workforce. All justified in government buildings with the slogan "In God We Trust" proudly displayed...

In some regards, I think where we are going is better than where we have been...

oh man, don't EVEN try to make me believe there's a correlation between the removal of prayer in schools and the deterioration of the KKK....there was NEVER any connection between the two

...the KKK, segregation, all that crap was/is the mindset of a very SMALL percentage of people....NONE representing the beliefs of mainstream Christians

There is about the same amount of correlation as the original post with the removal of prayer and correlating that to getting shot while in school.

Use extremism to try and make a point but cry extremism when it is used to counterpoint...not a fair fight, imo.

*shakes head and shrugs*

This chain mail/post has been around a long time. Snopes says since 1999. Thats forever in internet time. Its no different than 99% of all the other chain mails of the political/religious/culture war type in that its almost entirely based on fallacies and half-truths. The "extremism" you allude to is a slippery slope argument, and there are quite a few of those sprinkled throughout that post.

Fighting extremism with extremism is a....both sides are doing it move.

I don't disagree one bit...but if you post them in forums for discussion you should expect people to expose it for what it is rather than base a serious discussion around it.

I guess I am lost when I hear that prayer has been removed from schools.

I am almost 50 and never once while I attended school was there ever a time set aside for prayer, people make it sound like there was time set aside for it. I don't recall any mention of religion in school at any level.

I talked to my parents and they don't ever recall praying in school either.

When exactly did they remove it?
