oh my gosh no doubt....I've turned football off because it's making me think it's the NBA..that's how BAD the officiating I've seen today is...

I love football, but these games are taking way too long to play. The jets/steelers game just started the 4th quarter

Question here....because I was confused during the Vikings game (about a lot of things...their play calling at the top of the list)...about the game clock.
As the Vikings were far too non-chalantly driving down the field for their 1st of 2 late TDs, Percy Harvin ran for a 1st down and went out of bounds. When the announcer said the game clock would restart when the official placed the ball I thought 'does he think this is a college game?' ....but sure enough, the clock started again When did THAT start? And if that started this year.....games should be shorter, not longer than last year, yes, Mr. Replacement Official?

Don't remember when it started (2years ago?), but here is the rule:

I think these refs are getting "specialized" training from the NFL each week...yesterday it seemed like they were focusing on offensive holding, something I didn't see called very much in week 1. Whereas in week 1 it seemed like the refs were focusing on pre-snap procedures and motion penalties. Maybe next week they'll work on defensive holding and pass interference on the secondary....I think the defense is taking advantage of the "non-call" attitude of some of these refs.

Last night's game was interesting...
It seemed that the refs would wait until the whistle to throw their flags sometimes. After many penalties or discussions about the spot, down, etc... it seemed like it took a very long time for these guys to "get it right". Even though I have seen these refs make their fair share of mistakes, I've also seen the "real" refs be just as awful ... so are they really worse or is it just a matter of perspective? (no matter who is reffing is going to stink) |

I can't agree. I don't think I have seen the real refs ever be this bad. Yes the real refs make their share of mistakes but nothing like this. I think as long as there are replacement refs, teams should have one or maybe even two more chances to throw the red flag. IMO

Ed Hochuli - head ref of the NFL refs being locked out - I have personally witness him make some of the biggest mistakes imaginable and, literally, hand a game to a team that clearly deserved to lose. On one call (Jay Cutler fumble he ruled as an incomplete pass) Ed had the opportunity to use replay to correct his mistake, but like most of the "real refs" of today, they think using replay is a way to undermine their authority and came up with a bs call that was clearly, still incorrect. Replacement refs may make a bad call, but at least they are using replay to get the calls right, something many of the "real" refs are very reluctant to do. As I continue to say, I think people are "perceiving" the replacement refs to be worse then the real ones, but in reality, they are all human doing the best job they can and unfortunately, errors will be made regardless. Because the replacement refs are "under the microscope" criticism of them is going to be there. It's unfortunate that the real refs have been able to essentially brush off their bad calls as just another day in the office while the replacement refs are skewered almost daily by fans and the media. |

the problem is....comparing the replacement refs to 'real' refs means we're subconsciously comparing 2 weeks of work to years of it....
and remember, these guys are available primarily because they couldn't cut it as college officials......so on the one hand we can only expect so much, on the other we want to be able to watch a game and NOT feel like the officials are a significant part of the story....... I still say- make the 'real' officials full time employees of the league. Make them train, physically and otherwise, year round. With more training, hold them to a higher standard and penalize them if they fall short. We'll get a better quality product on the field...which is what we all want.
