Cannabis and sports
OK, so I went to college in the 70s and so have more familiarity with pakalolo than a lot of people do. We've seen players get busted for it, we've all found it ridiculous to refer to pot as a PED....given enhancing performance isn't what happens nor why someone uses it, not even someone going to a hot dog eating contest...
Today golfer Matt Every was suspended for 12 weeks, despite the fact he has a prescription for it........not that I understand a 12 week suspension when there's not even a tournament most of those weeks..... Randy Gregory of the Cowboys supposedly has a prescription, but has been suspended more than once. Isn't it time to treat marijuana basically like alcohol? Although I'll say this, I was stunned last Christmas to talk to an employer in Denver, who said that, since it's been legalized there, he can't stop employees from smoking on breaks...and he's in construction! I said....wait, you can't stop them? Why? Alcohol is legal, and you can stop them from drinking on the job. Anyway, is it fair for these athletes to get suspended? Or where do we draw the line? Chris Long said he smoked during his entire career, he simply knew when to stop and not fail his annual drug test. Josh Gordon couldn't seem to stop.

Playing golf stoned is not easy
IMHO....if you have a prescription.......you should be good to go. Were I Every, I'd appeal and/or sue the PGA.

Agree marijuana should be treated like alcohol. Even recreational as it is legal in many states. It is no way a performance enhancement drug.

The problem is it is still a federal crime. Leagues cannot “condone” it, keep in mind they have federal antitrust exemptions. Even with a prescription under state disability laws there is still the federal aspect, which is why a lawsuit probably would go nowhere. There are different issues lying under the surface with states legalizing it. Some property owners do not want to lease to dispensaries or growers for fear of having their property seized in the event the feds ever take that dark turn.

frankly, I don't know how you 'mericans get anything done with all the different state vs federal laws....both thinking its their business.
de-criminalizing on the federal level must come first....never understood how the state thinks it can change federal law by writing its own state law. **playing golf stoned ... first of all, thc does more to help anxiety than anything affordable on the market (imo)....focus is enhanced also. taste, smell, touch...they are all affected. no, I do not play 'better' stoned, but I am far more able to not let negative play bring anger to the table In conclusion....being stoned playing golf does not improve my score directly, but it does improve my performance. so....

Leagues don't have to condone it to simply not test for it....or penalize players for such small amounts in their systems, like Josh Gordon one of those times when 2nd hand smoke was temporarily his defense I believe.

If they don’t test for banned substances, don’t they lose credibility? Hands over eyes and ears so as not have to enforce any policy is asking for trouble.

why is it required to be a banned substance? because it's federally illegal?

Yep. There have been federal courts that have upheld termination of employees who failed drug tests in states that allow medicinal marijuana, because it is illegal under federal law. |

However, I guess what I was meaning is....would it be viewed as condoning illegal activity if the NFL chose to not include THC as a substance they checked and penalized for? I'm betting there are illegal substances they do NOT check for already, this would just be adding another? OR, since they HAVE been checking for it all this time, would dropping it give the appearance of condoning it...

Agreed. I am guessing they test for coke. Maybe the difference is that smoking pot is known to occur frequently, and the aftermath of Ricky Williams, whereas other substances are not. We never hear of those LSD trips! |

Then there's the huge increase in the use of CBD oil, only some of which can be used the way football players have and pass tests
