here is an article by a fella with a more researched opinion. Bob Nightengale
https://www.usatoday.com/story/sport...lb/3129226002/

the system is broken...

Quote:
Judge will earn $684,300 this season, or about $300,000 less than Los Angeles Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw will earn for each start.
Quote:
It’s why Tampa Bay Rays ace Blake Snell got a mere $15,500 raise – $10,000 of that built in with a league-wide increase in the minimum salary – to $573,700, even after winning last year’s Cy Young award. It’s why the New York Mets are paying closer Edwin Diaz just $607,425, after he led the majors in saves. It’s why the Milwaukee Brewers renewed reliever Josh Hader at $687,600, despite his setting a major-league strikeout record for left-handed relievers.

and in other quirks.....Bobby Bonilla is still getting 1.2mil a year from the Mets despite not having played for them in 20 years

Trevor Bauer wasn't wrong when he said they should all get 1 year deals. I understand not giving tens of millions a year right away to a young talent, but there's gotta be a better system......and this is in a system withOUT a salary cap...

have to wonder why they went that high vs just beating Harper's deal......not that I don't believe Trout is of higher value

on the one hand, higher taxes in California

But you know Harper is thinking.....not only is Trout NOT coming to Philly, his contract makes Harper's look almost puny (from their standpoint....from mine I'd take 10% ...1% of one year and be ecstatic)

Doesn't have to. They think they will earn back his entire contract way before it runs out. As far as salary hit to team payroll in relation to today's dollar it will probably be 1/3 of what it is now near its end.

That's actually an excellent point.

Somebody told me that Bobby Bonilla, the long since retired outfielder, is still getting annual paychecks from the Mets. Seems silly, but if it's just delayed compensation for what he gave them during his productive playing days then maybe not so dumb.

1.19 mil every July 1st until 2035.....Bernie Madoff was one of the causes of the Mets doing these kinds of deals. I think they are still paying Strawberry too.

didn't seem unusual on first read.....but Verlander just got $66mil

....then I realized it was only for 2 years...and he's 36.......baseball's version of Tom Brady making big bucks but still less than his wife
