Natalie's brother is home from Iraq recently. He wrote this back in June of last year, to honor a fallen comrade. I thought it was worthy of a forward ..

I raised my arm 12 times today

I raised my arm 12 times today,
Just to say goodbye
I saluted each and everyone,
while trying not to cry

Of the 12 I knew but one
but through him I knew them all
the pain their mothers and comrades felt
when they each received that call

I know the anger shock and sadness
that we all felt today
I know their deaths won't be in vain
tho why I cannot say

I was there when he met his fate
and can feel the others' too
I remember the disbelief I felt
when I learned his life was through

I'll not forget that fateful night
I'll see the flames forever
Nor will the 11 others friends
as we send them all off together

for the dozen heros
we said a heartfelt prayer
gave them all one last salute
and submitted them to God's care

This poem was dedicated to Sgt Kimmel Watt, a native of Jamaica, from Brooklyn, N.Y. Kimmel was 21 and was killed when a roadside bomb blew up his vehicle.

At an Independence Day ceremony at Camp Victory, Baghdad, Iraq, General David Petraeus dedicated the ceremony to two soldiers who were killed in action before they could be sworn in as citizens. One was Sgt Kimmel Watt. About 160 troops from 52 countries were given citizenship during the ceremony. 588 soldiers re-enlisted.
