Default MLB Pitching scandal

I am surprised this hasn't been brought up for discussion here.

IMO MLB is well aware of what these pitchers are doing and turns a blind eye to it. I am against ANY form of cheating in ANY sport. If you cannot get an advantage on your opponent due to talent and hard work and have to resort to cheating, you're a POS.

The big thing not being discussed in any of the numerous stories I have read about this is the fact that these pathetic batting averages are going to cost hitters millions of dollars in contract renewals and performance bonuses in their present contracts. If some pitcher was taking money out my pockets......I'd be grabbing baseballs and turning them all in.

Any thoughts?

Some talk like cheating has been going on as long as there's been a sport....like, however true, it excuses continuing to allow it.

Most recently, of course, we had the Asstros doing what they did, and not the current topic.

Tied to it somewhat, however, is Trevor Bauer- a guy who went from decent pitcher to top tier pitcher after -----ing about the Asstros....only to now be one of the pitchers front and center in 'Spin Gate'.

A few days ago Tyler Glasnow, another guy whose 'ability' has spiked in the last couple years, is actually trying to blame baseball's 'witchhunt' for his injury. Why? Because he couldn't create the same spin rate without his foreign substance of choice and had to grip the ball too hard.

Gerrit Cole is another one. Already a top level pitcher in Pittsburgh, He still made a jump...after going to Houston and in the 2018 time frame this ---- apparently started in.

So, in an era when most sports have made adjustments to increase offensive outputs, what has baseball done? Allowed this BS to continue (to this point) while deadening the ball.......so pitchers willing to 'bend' rules have looked like the 2nd coming of Cy Young, getting bigger contracts than they would have otherwise....while hitters are underperforming and losing money or their chance to get as big a contract.

....and that doesn't even get into the discussion about whether or not all these excessive infield shifts should continue

well..i have thoughts....
Spitballs have been around forever....but its the foreign chit causing a problem.
foreign substances have been illegal for long time too.
its the enforcement of the rule that is not being pushed.

That said, I had not noticed batting averages 'down' on the whole until i looked at the whole league and see less than thirty averaging >.300

is that low?...i dunno, seems like it, i suppose.
where would it likely be if the rule was enforced?

how to enforce?...some kinda season to multi season ban, imo

umpire to the mound on request?...like a replay flag? hitters request?...then what? some kinda litmus test? sanitizer spray?

:cheers

it CAN be done...i don't see why they let it go on.

People willing to bend the rules to get an edge will continue to look for ways to bend the rules to get an edge. That doesn't mean it should be allowed.

One thing I do like about what they're doing is that, if a pitcher IS caught, not only does he face a 10 game (I think) suspension, but his TEAM CAN'T REPLACE HIM ON THE ROSTER so they play the next 10 days a player short.

FWIW, team batting averages have generally been in the .255 range the past decade, .260+ before that. Last year was .245, this year so far .239

The last 4 years (since 2018 appears to be the year this foreign substance thing 'spiked')
2018- .248
2019 .252 (live ball)
2020- .245
2021- .239

prior to that, the .251 BA in 2014 was the only year since 1972 the overall team BA was below .254

Under MLB's new rules, managers can request that umpires check an opposing pitcher, but only if there is reason to suspect he is using something illegal.
