Default RIP Kevin Ward, Stewart won't race today

http://www.foxsports.com/nascar/stor...ar-race-081014

I wasn't there, but I've read a bit from people who were and, at the very least, there seems to be questions...

Those not yet aware...Tony Stewart was in a sprint car race on a dirt track last night when a young driver, upset that Tony had pushed him into the wall, got out of his car and was on the track when Tony came back around. Tony's car tragically hit and killed Kevin Ward at that point.

Yes, you can question what Kevin was thinking getting out of his car. But, witnesses also say Tony revved his engine and swerved just prior to hitting him....the question being whether Tony was just trying to get around him or what. There are also unsubstantiated rumors that Tony instructed his crew to remove and dispose of the right rear tire that struck Kevin...which really makes little sense, but it's out there.

Tony's camp originally inferred he would race today per normal...that has since changed and Regan Smith will drive Tony's car.

omg!

condolences to Kevin Ward family and friends.

Mr Stewart....has 'withdrawn' from race this weekend. D-uhhh!

I am surprised/shocked/agog that there is no criminal investigation underway...wth?

I can certainly see from here that there may have been 'intent'.
Pretty sure those cars rarely(if ever) kick left...and he seems to purposely hit the throttle... but Mr. Ward shouldn't have been there either...very little reaction time

I'm afraid he may have let his 'hot-head' get the better of him.
He won't be the same guy anymore...

I am no Stewart fan but.......no way do I believe that he hit him intentionally. Ward was a fool for walking down the track.

I agree.

If Kevin Ward wanted to "talk" to Tony about the racing that happened on the track, that is done in the pits...

I'm a little disappointed to see this exact mindset so prevalent, to be honest. We're talking about a 20 yr old kid, who wouldn't have the experience or maturity to react as rationally as someone older would be expected to. Plus, while I know it's different at 100mph or whatever their speeds were, it sure appeared Stewart should shoulder some blame (not inferring intent, just incorrect/slow reaction) given the gap in time between him and the car in front of him. Again, not throwing all the blame on Tony, but not real comfortable pointing the finger at a kid who lost his life, either.

The driver in front of Stewart almost hit the kid....most of the video I've seen shows things slowed down so it's pretty tough to judge the "gap" between cars. Couple that with the fact that Ward was dressed all in black and that that end of the track was as dark as could be.........accidents happen. I can assure you, if I was driving and all of a sudden some fool was standing in the middle of a dirt track at night, I'm not so sure ANYONE could have reacted quick enough. There is no stopping those cars on that type of track and they rarely go where you point them without accelerating (as in drifting).

The whole thing is merely an unfortunate accident that could have easily been avoided...IF Ward , as Sayow said, had taken care of his business in the pits....as is often done.

No one can really say what Tony was thinking, seeing or doing in that instance. There are several videos on YouTube that show video from the cockpit from one of the cars, like Tony was driving, racing...visibility inside those is also far from ideal. With the lighting as poor as it was, the guy was wearing black and a person can barely see anything in the periphery views...Tony may not have even knew what happened until it was already done.

Also, as you point out Orren, the kid is 20 years old...climbing out of your vehicle to make a scene with a famous NASCAR driver... I think he was doing a little grandstanding trying to get some ink of his own by jawing at Stewart in the middle of the track.

Experienced or not, I do believe one of the first rules of most race tracks is that if you get in a wreck and your car is not on fire, remain in your vehicle until safety crews arrive. Just because others have disobeyed that rule in the past doesn't make it safe.

The sad fact is the only person that knows what Mr. Stewart intended to do is Mr. Stewart and he is not going to say what his intent was because it is pretty unlikely that he would testify in court under oath. And without Mr. Stewart testifying proving intent is very hard for prosecutors to do. How do the prosecutors know what Mr. Stewart was thinking just prior to the death of Mr. Ward? This is part of the reason why there will be no criminal charges, as it stands now, against Mr. Stewart. This could change of course but it is very unlikely especially with the type of lawyers Mr. Stewart has on his behalf. Now when it comes to a civil proceeding in court the Ward family will seek damages from Mr. Stewart for the death of their son.

I don't know this as a fact but I think the reason Mr. Ward confronted Mr. Stewart on the track was because their was an incident between the two earlier in the race.

I get that but, Peter Johnson is a straight forward honest guy and I value his opinion, it's worth the listen.
