Wish I had an answer to that. Players (and the enablers owners) need to recognize hockey can't afford the contracts other sports pay, but I know that is never going to happen.

I think it would all become "relative" if there were fewer teams...that is the "stars" would get what the market dictated. The remaining teams in the league are the ones that want to spend more money on players but the salary cap prevents them from doing so. With fewer teams and only the more profitable franchises, the cap would begin to move up so the best players would have more of an opportunity to make even more money than they do now.

The low quality players (and play) would be phased out of the game completely, the game and the league would only get stronger because of it.

imo

The NHL has made a new offer to the players' association that proposes a 50-50 split of hockey-related revenue and a full 82-game season starting Nov. 2.

As talks resumed Tuesday in Toronto between the league and the NHLPA, Commissioner Gary Bettman announced the offer, which is crafted for — if nothing else — a quick response from the head of the players' association, Donald Fehr.

"It was done," Bettman said, "in the spirit of getting a deal done."

Fehr told reporters that the proposal is for six years.

Looks like there will be a season after all. 50 50 split sounds fair enough.

hockey.

done with the bull hooey for a while I hopes.

Seriously tarnished image that they spit shined in quite a hurry.

Damage?....hopefully not too bad.

so...will hockey go into July now?

Hockey will start on Nov 2 if the players accept the proposal. The deal was designed so they can figure the logistics of the schedule, end at the normal time, with each team playing an additional game every 5 weeks.

Great that this may be resolved but I'm not in favor of a Nov 2nd start or full 82 game schedule. We saw from the NBA last year that a short preseason combined with more games in a shorter time period resulted in more injuries.

Have a 66 game schedule with a full preseason. I was actually excited for a shorter season, it's more exciting. IMO

not only more injuries but lower quality overall play, at least early on

I don't know how the CBAs work, but would players get full salaries? or salaries based on number of games played....after all, fewer games equals less money coming in, so would stand to reason some of that would have to come out of the players pockets

....just thinking that's why they're dangling a full 82 game schedule out to players because it would mean full salaries

Injury, sloppy play NBA season was a joke, but it's all about money, and less games less money.

NHL players showed up in force on Thursday as the union prepared to respond to the league's proposal to end the lockout and start a full season Nov. 2.

The NHL Players' Association confirmed it will make a new offer during negotiations on Thursday. Among the 18 players at the talks were Sidney Crosby, Jarome Iginla, Jonathan Toews and Eric Staal. The scene looked similar to one in August when the union made its first proposal.

On Tuesday, the NHL proposed a 50-50 hockey-related revenue split and an 82-game regular season. For that to happen, the sides must reach an agreement by Oct. 25.
Full story here.

Since the players are going to offer a counter proposal, I'm guessing they didn't like everything in the owners latest submission.

the "players" didn't like or the union bosses didn't like? I've often felt that if union bosses actually polled ALL of the players, some outcomes may have been different and sooner.

I think that is a very accurate observation...

So to clarify...the player's union did not like the latest proposal from the owners.

I saw on twitter where the NHL owners had hired Frank Luntz in some form of capacity. When I saw that I had 2 thoughts: 1) It became real easy to know which side Im rooting for and 2) there wont be a season this year.
