Driver Killed in Beltway Crash

An unidentified man was killed early yesterday when his car slammed into the rear of another car on the outer loop of the Capital Beltway near Route 1 in Prince George's County, Maryland State Police said.

Police said the 32-year-old driver was ejected from his vehicle about 1 a.m. and died at the scene. The operator of the second vehicle, an off-duty Baltimore City police officer, was not seriously injured. State police did not identify either driver.

Police said excessive speed appeared to be a factor in the crash. The outer loop was shut down for several hours.

Police noted that when it was reopened, several intoxicated motorists were found passed out in their vehicles and arrested on drunken-driving charges.
