Default Tour Championship this week

OK, so we've run into this before and I want us all on the same page.

The Tour Champtionship for the PGA starts tomorrow...2 things to pay attention to that aren't like other tournaments (besides the fact it's such a limited field).

1) They start out with descending scores based on current standings. Patrick Cantlay is leading, so he'll start the tournament at -10...but that doesn't impact his stats HERE, we still go by a golfer's daily stats.

i.e. Dustin Johnson finished at -21 last year, but his actual score was -11

2) Money. The overall purse last year was a whopping $46million, which of course is dramatically larger than a normal tournament and would result in some ridiculous divis here- Dustin Johnson won $15,000,000 last year, double what many entire purses are.

For OUR purposes, it's illogical to give these guys those earnings for this coming Sunday because they've actually earned much of it with their play for the season, not just this tournament.

What we've done the last couple years since they started this is use something similar to the purse and percentages they'd used prior.

To simplify things, I'm proposing we just use a standard $10,000,000 total purse that breaks down like this:
1 20.484% $2,048,400
2 12.404% $1,240,420
3 7.852% $785,220
4 5.576% $557,620
5 4.666% $466,580
6 4.125% $412,525
7 3.841% $384,075
8 3.556% $355,625
9 3.329% $332,865
10 3.101% $310,105
11 2.873% $287,345
12 2.646% $264,585
13 2.418% $241,825
14 2.191% $219,065
15 2.077% $207,685
16 1.963% $196,305
17 1.849% $184,925
18 1.735% $173,545
19 1.622% $162,165
20 1.508% $150,785
21 1.394% $139,405
22 1.280% $128,025
23 1.189% $118,921
24 1.098% $109,817
25 1.007% $100,713
26 0.916% $91,609
27 0.882% $88,195
28 0.848% $84,781
29 0.814% $81,367
30 0.780% $77,953

This splits $10mil into a typical-ish breakdown more fitting for our purposes. Make sense? FYI last year we split an 8.5mil purse.

Makes perfect sense, and seems very reasonable.

Thanks for giving us a heads-up warning so we know how to play PGA this week. You're the best!

BTW......I do NOT like this system by the PGA. It is conceivable that the guy that shoots the lowest 72 hole score could NOT win the season championship.

It's conceivable the team with the worst record in the NBA won't get the #1 overall pick, too, yes?

This whole thing is set up as more than just a 'who has the best 4 days' thing. Golfers who didn't earn their way to a top seed should have a tougher hill to climb in that case then.

It really wouldn't be fair for the #30 player to outplay everybody in one tournament after NOT outplaying the 29 above him all year....and still be called the champion. They seed team sports in the playoffs, giving a team an advantage in each round.....same kinda thing.

Respectfully disagree. You really can't, IMO, compare team sports to an individual sport like golf. I get the analogy but ........

Team sport......win lose or draw, you still get paid.

Golf...not even close. You play crappy you make less than anyone above you. Play real crappy and you simply get paid nothing. The 3 or 4 guys that were multiple winners this year got paid more than anyone else in those tournaments....and they deserved that . They were the hottest players those weeks. I'm not convinced that they should get an advantage in the championship as well.

I think NASCAR might be a viable comparison to golf.

CANPA.......good on ya young man. You've been to hell and back and you've worked real hard to get back to your talent level. Nerves of steel and unflapable.

Side note....big hill for our USA Gals to climb tomorrow....good luck.
