I realize this is my third post in a row...but I have time to shop tonight and I need more info...from anyone!!!

I realized I have no disc drive yet! Again, I would like an opinion on the new Blu-Ray drives. I found this and again, it seems reasonably priced...comparitively.

Gonna buy a 'pewter dis wickend, unless strong words ( or arms, legs, chicks or any part of) blow my fingers from my mouse...as a really big wind might...=pretty damn good chance!

from what I know, Blue Ray is too far ahead of its time for most hardware out there.......i.e. your current DVD player (the one connected to your TV) probably can't even play a Blue Ray disc...and you only need a Blue Ray player if your TV is HD...so yeah, it might be nice to be that current, but it might also be frustrating for awhile.

happy to say 'da beast' runs very well! Vista Home Premium and all!
Been a year plus, now...upgrade time.

32994 Western Digital Velociraptor WD1500HLFS 150GB SATA 10000RPM 5.5MS 16MB Cache 3.5IN Hard Drive OEM 1 $255.26 $255.26

21012 Noctua NF-S12-1200 120MM Ultra Quiet Cooling Fan 1200RPM 81M3/H 17DBA Molex 2 $23.82 $47.64

I am doubling my RAM to the max...8GB
What I want to do, is use the 150GB SATA 10000RPM drive exclusively for my operating system(s)...Partition in half and use Vista Home Premium and Linux. Is this a good idea?

I needed the storage...so I think this solves my plans for the future too...as well as speed things up.

beasts diary: Putting this here helps me date things.

P5K Premium died last week.
I think i shorted out the board while changing monitors back and forth.

so, I upgraded a bit. I think.

New MoBo/CPU and RAM.

ASUS Sabertooth X58 LGA1366 DDR3 CrossFireX SLI 3PCI-E16 2PCI-E1 PCI USB 3.0 Motherboard
Intel Core i7 960 Quad Core Processor LGA1366 3.2GHZ Bloomfield 8MB LGA1366 4.8GT/S
Patriot Viper Xtreme 8GB 2X4GB DDR3 1866MHZ PC3-15000 9-11-9-27 1.65V XMP Ready Desktop Memory Kit

Five year warranty on board

Performance is now 5.9 on all categories

lesson learned: Static....bad

On a related topic...
no sooner was i done when Microsoft informed me I have three days to replace my license key.
Apparently each copy of Windows is allowed a number of rebuilds and then...that's it!!?
I run Vista.
I found a way to keep windows active for another 120 days without buying anything....but then what?
How would I go about changing operating system (to win7) and NOT losing info on that hard drive? (ie: registered programs such as SolidWorks or Simply Accounting)

You can't. One of the dumb things from Vista to 7 was it was a complete re-install.

The best you can do is backup your files [My Documents, My Pictures, etc] and then install 7. You'll still have to re-install software, but you won't lose your personal stuff.

But, I haven't look in a while. Somebody may have created an update tool to assist with -- may want to do a quick Google search before you take my advice

Thank You, Sir!!

Kinda settles things in my mind....best plan I think may be to go buy Vista again and just renew the product key.

There is ...what they call, an upgrade version for many shekels less than the full version. This would be all i need, would it not?
Running Home Premium now and would 'Upgrade'(?) to Business if I can do so without C-drive interruptus.

It's 60 bucks more for the encryption thingy you get with vista ultimate.....any comment?

Yeah, might as well 'upgrade' if it will allow you. Not sure what the stipulations are for a 'bad' key ...

I'd ask the guy at the store before you purchase it.

thanks again.
i took your advice and read some....
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/932795

Installing a 64-bit version of Windows Vista on a computer that is running a different 64-bit version of Windows Vista
The following list shows the 64-bit to 64-bit upgrade paths that are available:
Windows Vista Home Premium to Windows Vista Ultimate
Full Version.........$399.99
Upgrade Version...$259.99

This seems to be option A at the moment. (staples)
It says I can Back up the data by using the "Backup and Restore" feature in Windows Vista. ??
still open for other options, but this right now is actually the more economical if it does what i understand it to do

I have a good copy for a few hours yet, you think I may have changed things when I ran <slmgr\rearm>....?
My product key is valid for an upgrade even if it is expired....NO???

It should be. However, if for some reason Microsoft has 'invalidated' your key, then I don't believe you can use an upgrade key. Nevertheless, if you are sure it is merely because it's been installed/re-installed, then the upgrade version should be good!

Also, it shouldn't be an issue using Backup and Restore as long as you burn a copy of the backup to a disk before you upgrade . It is my guess, though, that you shouldn't even need to use it. If it is merely an upgrade within Vista and therefore shouldn't overwrite any of your files .

How to purchase Windows Vista:
Microsoft no longer sells Windows Vista, though we will continue to support it.
Visit your local or online retailer to buy a PC with Windows Vista.
Desktop operating systems /Latest service pack /End of mainstream support /End of extended support

Windows XP
Service Pack 3
April 14, 2009
April 8, 2014

Windows Vista
Service Pack 2
April 10, 2012
April 11, 2017

Windows 7 has been thrust upon me at this point.
I took the time to try and understand the difference between an 'OEM' copy and a 'Retail' copy.
the price difference is substantial...yet is the same program.

I found this comment...
Quote:
retail - you can install on any number of pcs but only one at a time and you can upgrade it and it wont ask you to renter the cd key

oem - you can only install on one pc and it stays with that pc and if you do a big upgrade it will invalidate it and you have to call up india
I would like to think that this is my last computer....but that would be border line incompetency.
My options are narrowing down, but I quite sure Win 7 is in my very near future

I really, really like Win7 -- so don't fret re: that.

As for OEM vs. Retail. Another difference is that Windows will NOT offer you any form of free phone support. Typically you get an OEM copy when you purchase a pre-fab computer.

I didn't like Vista so I didn't install Vista on any of my machines, but I do like W7 and have installed it on at least 5 different machines with all with different hardware configs - both laptops and desktops - and so far I haven't had any problems with any of them. Adding devices, installing software have also been mostly headache free...

I took tomorrow off....
doing a full install of win7 ultimate.
Only two places in town with 'retail' version....everywhere else I tried had/has that %^*~!&^!! 'oem' version.
On line price is same as in town prices for retail version.
OEM versions are on sale everywhere....as low as a hundred bucks.

I have talked with several other people who echo the sentiments of both of you guys (thank you)....which would be that Win7 is great!
fingers are crossed that all goes smoothly.
