Congrats San Fran
Bumgardner is (this season) one of the best I have ever seen...well deserved MVP. Posey was MIA but Pence and Sandoval drove that team to win.
CONGRATS!

I know it is still amazing what Bumgarner did...not just pitching but pitching that well and that long after that little rest. But the media makes it out to be more than it is IMO. We've gotten so used to 5 man rotations and over 100 pitches is 'pushing it'...not that long ago guys regularly threw 150 pitches and did that every 4 days all season.
Even today...Bumgarner's 'norm' would have been to throw nearly the same number of pitches in his side session......... ..........just not under the duress of it being Game 7 of the World Series! He threw almost as many pitches and threw more strikes than the 2 starting pitchers COMBINED. Not often a guy is awarded a win that's changed to a save an hour later...on a day he 'shouldn't' have even been available to pitch. So yes, Congrats to the Giants...an incredible win, an incredible run. 3 championships in 5 years is something special...........and in none of those 3 years were they considered frontrunners even deep into the playoffs! BUT, ALSO Congrats to the Royals. They were only 48-50 on July 21 then had the best record in baseball over the final 64 games. They were down 7-3 with Jon Lester on the mound in the WC game and went on to sweep the Angels and Orioles...and worked their way to a Game 7 in the World Series before succumbing to what virtually any team on the planet would have...5 innings of Bumgarner

It's not often in the 21st century that you see a 5-inning save. Bumgarner was inspiring.

I agree with you O.
Bumgardner was fantastic, no question there. But because the media/game has drilled it into our heads that anyone that can pitch more than 100 pitches in a game and/or pitch on short rest must be super human is why Bumgarnder's performance is so elevated. At one time, many teams had at least one pitcher that was a "workhorse" and would routinely go out and pitch into the 8th inning and start on 3 days rest. Regardless, it was good to see a close game 7 and congrats to the Giants. |
