Default Big Brother In Full Effect.

The Obama administration has defended its gathering of phone records of millions of Verizon customers—right down to local call data—after the Guardian newspaper reported late Wednesday night that the National Security Agency has been collecting them under a top-secret court order issued in April.

Under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court order, the Guardian reported, Verizon Business Services must provide the NSA “on an ongoing daily basis” with information from calls between the U.S. and overseas—as well as from calls made entirely inside the U.S.
Story here.

Everyone knows that terrorists only use Verizon as their cell phone provider....

Do you guys remember when the Patriot Act was passed and the people who defended such actions were (very fallaciously) advocating that "if you dont do anything wrong you dont have to worry about it"? I wonder what those peoples opinions are of it now

Not just Verizon, it gets renewed every three months, and has been going on for seven years.

Some "information" was released today about the Verizon data collecting:

—The program is conducted under authority granted by Congress and is authorized by the Foreign intelligence Surveillance Court which determines the legality of the program. (Of course...our "outraged" congressional leaders have signed on and approved this.)

—The government is prohibited from "indiscriminately sifting" through the data acquired. It can only be reviewed "when there is a reasonable suspicion, based on specific facts, that the particular basis for the query is associated with a foreign terrorist organization." He also said only counterterrorism personnel trained in the program may access the records. (Complete lie - "indscriminately" means every piece of data will be reviewed)

—The information acquired is overseen by the Justice Department and the FISA court. Only a very small fraction of the records are ever reviewed, he said. (Another lie...they will collect and save all this info and if any/all of it is to be "reviewed" later for whatever reason, it will be)

—The program is reviewed every 90 days. (Yep, it is reviewed and likely expanded every 90 days because they aren't getting enough "dirt" on all the criminals (criminals=you and I) in this country.

Full story here.

Yep, it's not just Verizon... if you have an account or ever used any of the following web services, you likely are being "spied" on...

AOL Inc., Apple Inc., Facebook Inc., Google Inc., Microsoft Corp., Yahoo Inc., Skype, YouTube and Paltalk.

I wouldn't be surprised if both the Dems and Repubs are colluding to get this data to help them better target donors, sway voters and squelch/punish any 3rd party supporters.

I think it's pretty obvious that these tactics are useless for their purpose. If not .....why did they not get ahead of the Boston bombing? Those two morons should have been easily found out ahead of time.

While all of this is going on, more and more illegals enter the country without a second look from our government.

Not to mention a plethora of other real problems that could use some attention...instead, our government is spending OUR money to spy on us and criminalize us.

Please tell me Im not the only one who finds some irony in this thread descending from a nascent discussion on Big Brother to something straight out of 2 minutes of hate.

That being said, the boomers and first wave Xers are having their typical culture wars-style reactions to this which means nothing about this will get better as the adults who have yet to grow up continue to argue about which side is pettier, and thus business goes in as usual and unabated.
