Thanks

I totally missed Contreras

Side note though. Gomes didnt have a Stolen Base. I was at the game. Then watched again at home. He walked in the first.
Next 2 at bats were a pop up and a strikeout
4th he hit the 2 run home run.
5th he singled in 9th but was stranded at 1st.

So back to the first at bat. After walking in the first he did make it to 2nd on a throwing error as he moved up and a run scored. Believe ESPN play by play has it right. Also yahoo concurs.

1st inning
- J. Gomes walked, B. Phillips scored, J. Votto to third, S. Rolen to second
- E. Renteria hit sacrifice fly to right, J. Votto scored, S. Rolen to third
- S. Rolen scored, J. Gomes to second on J. Miranda's throwing error
- J. Bruce grounded out to first

3rd inning
- J. Gomes popped out to second

4th inning
- J. Gomes struck out looking

6th inning
- J. Gomes homered to deep left, S. Rolen scored

9th inning
- J. Gomes singled to right, J. Votto to second
- J. Francisco hit for N. Masset
- J. Francisco struck out swinging
- J. Bruce struck out swinging

Well like I said I watched it live then on TV. Now again. while I type.
This is how it went down. After a sac fly runner scores from 3rd and runner moves to 3rd leaving Gomes on 1st.

1-2 count on Jay Bruce pitcher looks home and throws to first. THey have him picked off. Gomes floats in the middle and the 1st baseman Miranda looks home then throws over the 2nd baseman's head. Gomes reverses direction from the pickle and takes 2nd. So unless I got this wrong. You cant steal a bag when picked off and in a run down. Then a throwing error gets you the bag. But hey not questioning you. You just went with what was printed on this 1 site.

sans the overthrow, if a guy is picked off yet still gains a base, he's credited with a steal...

and 'this 1 site' was mlb.com....which I don't use for stats, but we use as the 'tiebreaker' if there's question....just like we use nfl.com, nhl.com, and nba.com for those sports...

Yea like I said I dont know the rule. ESPN, CBS, MSN and Yahoo must not know the rule either. Just I thought when an error is committed no positive stats can occur. Either one or the either I thought. But I could be wrong.

FYI I found this for MLB.com official scoring

10.07 Stolen Bases And Caught Stealing
The official scorer shall credit a stolen base to a runner whenever the runner advances one base unaided by a hit, a putout, an error, a force-out, a fielder's choice, a passed ball, a wild pitch or a balk, subject to the following:

Once again this is moot and just for discussion purposes. I accept the DIVI. Just not the ruling.

c) When a runner, attempting to steal, or after being picked off base, evades being put out in a run-down play and advances to the next base without the aid of an error, the official scorer shall credit the runner with a stolen base. If another runner also advances on the play, the official scorer shall credit both runners with stolen bases. If a runner advances while another runner, attempting to steal, evades being put out in a run-down play and returns safely, without the aid of an error, to the base he originally occupied, the official scorer shall credit a stolen base to the runner who advances.

(f) When in the scorer's judgment a runner attempting to steal is safe because of a muffed throw, the official scorer shall not credit a stolen base. The official scorer shall credit an assist to the fielder who made the throw, charge an error to the fielder who muffed the throw and charge the runner with "caught stealing."

(h) The official scorer shall charge a runner as "caught stealing" if such runner is put out, or would have been put out by errorless play, when such runner
(1) tries to steal;
(2) is picked off a base and tries to advance (any move toward the next base shall be considered an attempt to advance); or

So after reading up on the rule Gomes should be charged CAUGHT STEALING. But hey...now we know. But sadly I agree if your stat feeds show SB there is nothing we can do.

CBS had him for a SB as well as MLB.com. Were you GUESSING re CBS?

SB - Joey Votto (1, 2nd base off Mickolio/Blanco), Jonny Gomes (2, 2nd base off Saunders/Blanco)...this info was there (CBS) last night and is STILL there...........

these sports sites don't do their own stats...the bulk of them get their stats from Stats, Inc.....they buy real time feeds...those feeds are updated every few minutes...and come (believe it or not) from sources such as people like you and I who are paid on a per game basis to watch and log stats according to what they see.....so perhaps the scoring was originally one way and changed to another...and the site you saw carried one version of the scoring at the time you looked...

..the point still being, if there's a question, it's not what our feed says that counts, the 'arbitrator' is mlb.com for baseball...

but you're reading the scoring incorrectly....if a guy isn't out on the play, he cannot be 'caught stealing'...if he advances a base, it's a stolen base........my ONLY question being how they would score the advance given there was an error...and, by mlb.com, the official scorer must have judged he'd advance the base with or without the bad throw

He was actually in the pickle and Miranda just threw it into left field then Gomes advanced. Like I said I am not arguing the decision or the divi. I just wanted to know the official ruling. Also look at (H) then (2). It reads that a runner shall be deemed caught stealing if he would have been put out on an errorless play. I dont think I am misreading it. But I put it out here to discuss in an open forum as I trust your opinions.
