$300+ mil contract?!
Rumor is....with Robinson Cano a FA after the season, he's looking for a contract worth....
...which is apparently the amount A-Hole's contract woulda been worth if he maxed all incentives (hence the reason for the 5mil at the end) The only thing more insane than saying it? Is the Yankees...or someone..just may do it.

Without further singling Cano out, contracts in sports are just out of control, period...and 'they' keep saying it's because the revenues are there to support it.
Guess why the revenue IS there to support it....and it's not just because millions of us are 'addicted'......it's because advertisers will continue to pay more and more and more to get their products in front of all of us addicted bastids..........and the advertisers get the money for that...by increasing what they charge us for their products. So the more we watch, the more we pay...and we're too addicted to stop.

So now, there is still "feature" games in every sport on the major networks but alternate games can be shown on any number of other sports channels...all of which are fighting for more content and, thus, willing to shell out more money to the sport leagues to get their content which continues to fuel the "machine". I scratch my head because I thought the sports "market" was at its saturation point a few years ago, but since then it has only spawned a number of new networks...all of which seem to make enough money to remain viable. As the major sports television contracts expire it will be interesting to see how things go....there is already a rumor that Google is going to make a run at the NFL offering them a BILLION dollars ... and Google has no plans to air the NFL on traditional airwaves...so that would be in addition to network coverage... So if you think salaries in professional sports is obscene right now...just wait... |

It seems to be a wee bit high what Robinson Cano wants and what he actually gets will be interesting. And it would seem to me two teams may want Cano in the Dodgers and Yankees and these two teams it appears to me can pay Cano a lot of money no matter what the final amount is.
One other thing to mention the Yankees have had as much salary on the D.L. as many teams have to spend for much of the season. How many of those Yankees players will be playing for them next year? A-PED may get suspended for a full season+. Who knows how Jeter will be and he will be in his late 30's when he does come back. Robinson Cano could be with the Dodgers. It will be a very interesting off season for the Yankees indeed. And what has all of this spending by the Yankees gotten them not even the postseason much less getting even close to the world series which last time I checked is the goal for every team.

a problem for the Yankees is, they are losing Rivera, they don't want ARod, Jeter back or not it's not for more than a year or two regardless of how well he comes back........so who's the face of the Yankees if not Cano?
a problem for Cano in expecting a 10 year contract is...he'll have turned 31 by the time any contract offer comes along.......who..Yankees, Dodgers, Phillies, ANYone...wants to commit to a contract until a guy is 41 years old...especially after seeing how well that's working out with ARod and Pujols? No, he may well get his $30mil/yr as absurd as that sounds...but it wouldn't IMO be a remotely smart idea to do it for 10 years.

I just get the sense that the Yankees are actually trying to being a little smarter with their money. The Yankees' did not really try to replace Jeter and A-PED before the season started. And they did not try to make a move for a 1b after Tex got hurt. I even thought signing Jeter to a long term deal was not very smart and that was before the injury problems I am thinking. Maybe the Yankees should give Cano 300,000,000+ over five seasons instead of ten. But that would not very smart because of the A-PED situation because they are paying him until his early 40s but his long suspension has to play it self out in the offseason. Plus I just do not think it is a wise idea to give one player over 10% of the team total salary. Pujols is just the latest example of this. As I said earlier it may be a very interesting offseason for the Yankees' indeed.
