Adrian Peterson wants to change jerseys from #28 to #23, but it's going to cost him...




I think it's ridiculous to pay that kind of money just to change jerseys, but if you have that kind of cash and you want to make a good friend...

What do you guys think?

I think it's ridiculous that the manufacturer can hold these guys hostage. Yes, I think they're probably owed something.

But this million dollars is to purchase unsold jerseys....so is it AP's fault they've printed that many w/o having sold them yet?

I'm not entirely sure what the rule is, but in basketball, they have a deadline. Why can't the NFL just institute a deadline? It's not like the season is just around the corner.

But yeah, there's no way he should have to pay for unsold jerseys. That's the NFL's fault. I mean, what if he gets traded?

and were it me...that would be my defense. Do the owners have to cough-up $$$$ to the jersey makers in that case? I've never heard/read that they do. There are a number of reasons why they make extra jerseys....I doubt that any of those reasons are because the player told them to.......

It's total crap on many levels...

First, if AP (or any player were to change #'s in the NFL) their old jersey's would likely be sold off regardless...sure, maybe at a discounted rate, but sold nonetheless. (I can still get a San Diego Tomlinson Jersey for very cheap.)

Second, the $1 million figure is likely the "retail value" of the unsold jerseys ... and anyone that knows anything about the garment business knows then the actual figure, for NFL Jersey's, is likely 80% of that...meaning $200k is the true value of the unsold merch. But again, it doesn't really matter because that stock would sell anyways and if not, there are plenty of needy that would be more than happy to don an old AP jersey if given one.

And third, you would think the NFL and NFLPA would embrace number changes...means more jersey sales and more money in the pockets of all the affiliated parties. This policy in the NFL seems very backwards in relation to their usual motives (money driven), imo.

As mentioned earlier, these guys make a lot of money. A million is only a percentage of some of their salaries.
That being said....the better part of those are flakes!
If everyone could change their numbers willy-nilly from week to week, a whole bunch would!.....I mean, where do you draw the line?
A million dollars a pop will curb the whimsical.

Is that the amount it cost to manufacture the jerseys, or how much they are worth if they are all sold?

It seems like they could just switch the 8 to a 3.

I'm sure the kids making them won't mind working overtime.

You obviously need to implement some sort of structure to allow for number changes. I don't think anyone would like it if a player switched to a new number every season or even repeatedly throughout their career ... maybe allow 1 change after every 5 years of playing in the NFL for a player, if they so choose.

Of course, a player can circumvent the process by simply getting traded or sign with a new team and then select your new number at that time...

generally speaking, when a new player comes to a team wanting a number already in use, they work out a deal with that player....and there's not much else to it because the player giving it up isn't usually a star

for example, when McNabb became a Viking, he wanted the #5 he'd always worn....but punter Chris Kluwe had it....well, Reebok wasn't too worried about the number of Kluwe jerseys already out there so the only issue was Kluwe letting McNabb have it and for what price

Kluwe being the goofball that he is (and him knowing Don is, too) his deal was that Don had to give 5k to a charity of Kluwe's choice and that Don had to mention Chris' fledgling metal band in 3 separate interviews or some dorky thing like that

..then Chris proceeded to take Favre's old #4

Players can't request a jersey number already retired because once retired, the league no longer recognizes it....at least not without working out a deal with both the team and the retiree
