Default Wyndham Championship Field

There are playing in Greensboro North Carolina.

The winner takes home $900,000.

The winner last year was Davis Love III.

This is the last chance for golfers to get one of the 144 slots to be in the FedEx cup which has only has 30 slots at the end of the golf season. And no I do not have a clue how they get from 144 slots to 30 slots. I barely even know what the Fedex Cup is. I guess I will just have to wait and see.

OK Peter...have some time.....don't have to go anywhere til 6:00 or so

The Fedex cup has actually been going on for the entire year. Regular tour members have been earning points since the Mercedes Championship..that being said..here's how it works

The 1st Fedex playoff tourn is next week..the Barclays. The top 144 players in point standings after this weeks tourn are in the barclays. The pts then reset and the top 120 will get in the next weeks tourn which is the Deutsche Bank Championship. After that tourn the points reset again and the top 70 get into the BMW tourn. This is the 1st of the 4 tourns that there will be NO cut! The top 30 after points reset and after the BMW get into the Tour Championship final. There will be no cut in this tourn either.

Now the good part...the winner of the final tourn gets 10 mil in prize $$.
2nd = 3 mil
3rd = 2 mil
4th = 1.5 mil
5th = 1 mil
Now..where things might get complicated here....the original 144 players will also win Fedex Cup money......144th will get 30K. There are some eligibility ramifications as well from this series of 4 tourns.....we'll get into those later.

One more thing....there are STILL 7 more official tournaments left on the calendar after the Tour Championship.

Hope that helped.

Some Tour Championship info

THE TOUR Championship presented by Coca-Cola
Year Winner Score Runner up Score
2002 Vijay Singh 268 Charles Howell III 270
2003 Chad Campbell 268 Charles Howell III 271
2004 Retief Goosen 269 Tiger Woods 273
2005 Bart Bryant 263 Tiger Woods 269
2006 Adam Scott 269 Jim Furyk 272

In 2001 Mike Weir beat Els, crybaby & Toms in a playoff

In my memory no player has won this tourn more than once....but Tiger has finished 2nd 3 times to go along with his win in 1999.

Here are the top 10 points getters so far (incl last weeks tourn):

FedExCup

Player Events Points

Tiger Woods 13 30,574

Vijay Singh 23 19,129

Jim Furyk 19 16,691

Phil Mickelson 18 16,037

K.J. Choi 21 15,485

Rory Sabbatini 19 13,548

Zach Johnson 19 13,341

Charles Howell III 21 12,126

Adam Scott 15 11,196

Scott Verplank 18 10,691

Notice the lead Tiger has....more importantly notice in how many fewer tourns than ANYONE else he has playued in......

Thank you rich for the nice picture of Amanda to look at.

Thank you for the great information once again Rich. I have a few questions and comments though.

So the fields get smaller and smaller after this week? Until there is only a field of 30 for the last tournament of the year? Which I am going to assume will be called the FedEx Cup thingie or something else similar.

Is crybaby your new nickname for Sergio? Just wanting to make sure.

I also noticed something else about Tiger's Fedex points. The golfer that has played in the fewest tournaments besides Tiger is Adam Scott who has played in two more tournaments than Tiger but Tiger has a 19,000+ point lead on him.

I guess no matter how you measure it Tiger is still a great golfer.

I actually think that Tiger is somewhat under appreciated. It is almost like we expect him to win majors and it is sort of not a big deal when he does win one. I just got that sense from the CBS broadcasters last Sunday. And no I don't think that it was intentional at all they were just living in the moment. I am sure Tiger would be the first one to say that most of his major wins are never easy even though he makes it look so effortless sometimes.

I will look this up a little latter but do Phil, Vijay and Ernie even come close to a combined 13 majors wins?

In the answer to my last question.

Phil has won the PGA championship one time and the Masters twice.
Vijay has won the PGA championship twice and the Masters once.
Ernie Els has won two U.S. Opens and the British Open once.

That is nine majors combined for these three golfers.

Tiger has won 2 U.S. Opens, 4 Masters, 3 British Opens in a row, and 4 PGA Championships.

Not only has Tiger won more majors than the three of these golfers combined. Tiger is the only one of them that has won at least one of all four of the majors.

That Tiger guy is pretty good.
