thanks Rich, the next call was not good at all....the nurse had misread the surgeon's report to my brother, she didn't lose a few inches of her large intestine, she basically lost all of it....but that's not the most pending issue, the main issue is the acid in her system, no kidney function to clear that out, and she's not tolerating even the slower dialysis at this point.....it's not looking at all good

After a couple days resulting in us cancelling surgery yesterday and pretty much resolving ourselves to letting her go, I was dreading getting up this morning. We had decided not to reschedule that surgery to not put her thru it. However, the surgeon called after I got to work and said she looked so much better he knew the ethical thing to do was to do that surgery. He was calling for consent, but felt he'd already gotten it from her as well.
Surgery went well, they don't feel she needs dialysis, may not need additional surgeries. Still a long long way to go and she doesn't yet know all that's gone on, doesn't know she'll have a colostomy bag for life, etc. But, she's alive, doesn't appear to have any brain issues, so we go from here.

SiteWolf, I feel you brother.
I was notified that my father (almost 79 years old) was admitted for dehydration and blood chemistry issues. He has had A-fib for decades as a result of Agent Orange exposure. That was Saturday before Thanksgiving. Estimate was for 24 to 48 hours in the hospital to get him back to normal. I was traveling and while it was a cause for concern it did not seem a cause for worry. Next day his A-fib kicked in and stuck his heartrate at over 200 beats per minute for over 5 minutes. How he didn't blow a gasket is beyond me. I was on the road home and several hours away from reliable communications as I drove across central Washington. Later in the day, he was back to near normal but in ICU. Time to worry but not to panic. But when I got home I unpacked my bags and hit the laundry room. Monday morning, with my kid home from college for the holiday, I got another call. Another crash. Southwest was my friend that day and got me from Seattle to OKC late Monday evening to find congestive heart failure, failing kidneys, blood clots in legs and lungs and sepsis. How we didn't lose him to any one of those things, much less all of them is beyond me. Perhaps it is because he is the strongest man I've ever known. As a Green Beret, he survived things in Vietnam that give me nightmares. Perhaps it is because he re-discovered his faith later in his life. Perhaps it is just plain dumb luck that he defied at least 4 fatal issues that all came crashing down at the same time. He is home now and regaining strength and stamina. Doctors say he should make a near complete recovery. He has some heart work ahead of him and perhaps some other issues to address, but is out of the Danger Zone. I returned to Whidbey Island this evening. If my Dad can survive that, I pray (and trust) that your sister can get through this. A friend once advised me, "If you are going to pray... why worry. You put it in God's hands, so let him handle it." I know it is easier said than done so am adding my prayers on top of yours. |

Runt, as a Nam Vet I'd appreciate it if the next time you talk to your dad...relay this to him:
Welcome Home Brother!

Greatly appreciated sentiments, Randy
And wow, that's a story re your dad. Only a small percentage of people seemingly would have survived that, let alone be told of full recovery. The human body is an amazing thing and I hope your father does exactly that, fully recover...maybe even better given episodes like that can correct issues like A-Fib. And you're right re prayer. It is something many understand, but few are able to practice. Prayer should eliminate worry. Worrying after prayer is doubting Him even tho you're worrying because you doubt your own connection to Him.

Unfortunately, slow but positive improvement took what appears to be a fatal hit overnight. I was awakened at 5am (Hawaiian time...after arriving here last night) by a member of sis's surgical team saying she's developing new leaks and they believe more surgery would do more than good. Sadly she may not survive the day. Not exactly what one wants to hear anytime, let alone with no chance to get back there.
