Down the drain do our values go.

The only thing I semi-agree with is the hate law addition. Then again, are there laws to protect sports fans? Seems absurb that a law needs to be made, when you really don't hear much about hate crimes against gays anymore.

Three quick questions.

What are these benefits the story is refering to?

How much is the estimated cost of these benefits?

Does a state have a right to make laws?

Truth is they simply want equal protection under the law. That which is guaranteed to all citizens by our most sacred document. A document that should supercede any other in matters of legality within our borders. Of course that's just the conservative in me....

As for specific rights they include:

Social Security pension

survivor benefits

renewal and termination rights to spouse's copyrights on death of spouse

continued water rights of spouse in some circumstances

payment of wages and workers compensation benefits after worker death

making, revoking, and objecting to post-mortem anatomical gifts

employment assistance and transitional services for spouses of members being separated from military service; continued commissary privileges

sponsor husband/wife for immigration benefits

Supplemental Security Income

disability payments for federal employees

medicaid

income tax deductions, credits, rates exemption, and estimates

joint filing of bankruptcy permitted

next-of-kin status for emergency medical decisions or filing wrongful death claims

domestic violence intervention

access to "family only" services, such as reduced rate memberships to clubs & organizations or residency in certain neighborhoods

Preferential hiring for spouses of veterans in government jobs

Tax-free transfer of property between spouses (including on death) and exemption from "due-on-sale" clauses.

Special consideration to spouses of citizens and resident aliens

Threats against spouses of various federal employees is a federal crime

Court notice of probate proceedings

Regulation of condominium sales to owner-occupants exemption

Funeral and bereavement leave

Joint tax filing

Insurance licenses, coverage, eligibility, and benefits organization of mutual benefits society

Making spousal medical decisions

Spousal non-resident tuition deferential waiver

Permission to make funeral arrangements for a deceased spouse, including burial or cremation

Right of survivorship of custodial trust

Right to enter into prenuptial agreement

Right to inheritance of property

Spousal privilege and confidential marriage communications

You're right, who cares that the US of A was founded on the morals and beliefs of the bible. Blah to the bible, right?

2004, hate crime distribution:

Link Here

Illegal to hate based on race, yet 53.8% of the crimes reported in the survey were related to race. Maybe we should make a law .... oh wait, there already is one. Making a law isn't going to end hate; educating will.

And just like people use the excuse of "you're born gay", I'm going to use the excuse of "you're born with hate". You won't ever stop hate crimes, but educating people will help. Making it illegal will do very little to the number of reported crimes. What a waste of money and time passing this bill.

Now, do I support homosexuallity? No, but I'm not going to tie a homosexual to the back of my car and drag them across a gravel road. Why? Because I was taught that rule number six of ten says "You shall not murder".

actually that's a common myth. given it's commonplace existence i'll refrain from offering an equally witty retort to your post.

might i suggest however that you do a quick recheck on your US history. pay close attention to the colonial period and note the real reasons for the establishment of the colonies.

for example, the colony of Virginia was founded soley for economic development religion had no bearing on its founding.

Massachuesettes to escape religious persecution. or in other words the beliefs of the majority that were forced upon others. as were maryland, rhode island, pennsylvannia, and connecticut. imagine how those founders would feel if they saw the travesty that has evolved from their ideal of religious freedom.

both of the carolinas were founded as proprietary colonies for the sole purpose of economic development. religion was not an issue.

georgia was established for two reasos. first to offer the criminal element filling English prisons a second chance at rehabilitation and second to protect the norther territories from the spainyards in the south (i.e., Florida)

New Hampshire was a fishing post.

New York was a ductch trading colony bought by the British and used as a seaport to provide commercial access to the new continent.

New Jersey was issued as a land grant to cateret by the duke of york soley out of friendship and loyalty again no religious undertones at all.

so as you can see from this very abridge version of US colonial history, of the 13 original colonies, 5 were founded based on religion. and without exception, all of those five were founded to escape religious persecution from the majority who (as is still the case) believe their way is the only way and thus should be shoved down the throats of all even those who choose not to suscribe.

two quick points one to show the fallacy in your logic. there are two times in all of our lives when it matters not who our neighbors are. the first is in the nursery, the second in the grave. people are not born filled with hate, they are taught to hate by ignorant, scared, little people.

second, do you support the death penalty? and if so why?

First of all, I know where you're going with this.

If a person can be proven beyond a reasonable doubt that they took the life of another person of purpose, then yes. [self-defense aside]

The one that comes to my mind is Andrea Yates. The woman drowned five children in a bathtub. If she's crazy, this world will still be better off without her.

Another interesting tid-bit:

The median age of death of homosexuals is 42 (only 9% live past age 65). This drops to 39 if the cause of death is AIDS. The median age of death of a married heterosexual man is 75.

Source: Fields, Dr. E. "Is Homosexual Activity Normal?" Marietta, GA via this link.

Proof that homosexuality is bad for the health.

actually no i wasn't going to take the low road and point out the inconsistencies between the basic tenets of chrisianity and capital punishment. the books of the new testament and the teachings of christ do a sufficient job of that by themselves.

i was simply going to ask you to offer me some evidence that violent crime has indeed diminished as a result of capital punishment. in fact it hasn't so my question would then be....

isn't it "a waste of money and time" passing such legislation?

what the heck does this have to do with anything? smoking is bad for one's health, and data shows that driving is a risky behavior often leading to untimely death. should perpetrators of both have their rights effectively stripped away from them? (ok in the case of smokers they have)

what about those who eat red meat? play contact sports? work in dangerous jobs (e.g., firefighters, police officers, fishermen, etc)? after all their life expectancies are far shorter than the average person. and since it's clear their lifestyles are dangerous why not simply strip them of all their rights. see the flaw in your logic? or at least the complete irrelevance?

Also:

If this is the trending pattern, why not extend these "rights" to non-married steady heterosexual couples? Hell, why even have that thing called "marriage"?
