hate cheaters.
I played golf for 35 years and was fortunate enough to play in numerous tournaments. There are some circumstances where a rules official is needed....but most penalty shot situations are able to be adjudicated by playing partners. One of those is an embedded ball. If the ball breaks the ground surface and sits way down....you would normally get relief with no penalty. When a player suspects that he has an embedded lie, the appropriate thing for him to do is to call an official or, at the very least, call over a playing partner and get their opinion on the lie. NEVERdo is to pick-up the ball yourself before anyone else has had the chance to look at it and then tell the official (or whomever) what happened.
