But on that subject, why didn't Kevin Everett get fined? He led with his helmet. (Do you see how stupid that sounds? Poor guy gets paralyzed, but technically did it doing something that is illegal according to the rule book.) |

Simms made the statement that as a running back downfield, the helmet to helmet penalty did not apply.
The NFL Rule Digest states... Under: 15 Yeard Penalties- "A tackler using his helmet to butt, spear, or ram an opponent". also, "Any player who uses the top of his helmet unnecessarily". No distinction is made regarding position. Simms is indeed a dolt. Interestingly enough, there are others that seem to never get called, but could a half dozen times a game. I'll mention "15 Yards: A punter, placekicker, or holder who simulates being roughed by a defensive player". as one...

I do not think Clark was leading with his helmet or, at least, not deliberately.
When I watched the hit live, I thought it was legal then as I do now. I think it would be a tough sell to say that Clark was making that hit with a deliberate intent to injure. And for the record, I am not a Steeler or Ravens fan. I have seen Rodney Harrison get fined and suspended for far less of a hit than this ... but in this case, I don't think any penalty should be issued because I think the play is legal within the context of the game. |
