The U.S. Open Field
They are playing in Oakmont, Pennsylvania.
A kid plays hockey very close to Oakmont. [Pittsburgh]  Geoff Ogilvy won last year. I wonder if the golf commentators will be talking about Mickelson's monumental collapse on the 18th hole last year at Winged Foot this year? I always thought the 17th hole last year was Mickelson's undoing. I seem to remember that he lost his rhythm on the 17th hole and never really recovered. The winner will take home more than a million dollars I dare say. I don't know the exact amount at this time.  Should we expect a lot of low scores this week? Re: MICKP, he did have a problem on 17 but 18 was DEF his undoing. His drive sucked....and he compounded that poor shot by trying to get too much out of his 2nd and 3rd shots. Had he faded a medium length shot on his 2nd he would have had a wedge to the green and no worse than a bogey.....he WINS the tourn. He's a go for broke guy and while I think he's great..both a golfer and a guy....I wish he's use a tad more discretion on some of his decisions coming down the stretch.
Re: low scores at Oakmont? I don't think so....the place is tough. They have made a significant change this year though.....they now are using "graduated rough". In other words...the first cut off the fairway is about 3 1/2 feet wide....cut at 1.5 inches. Then they have an intermediate rough....6 feet wide cut at 3+ inches.....then they get to the nasty gnarly shiznit that you cannot get out of with any authority. That change should help scoring...prob about a shot and a half per round....IMHO of course.

Thank you Rich again for the great information.
It sounds like from your description of the course it will be about as fun as Winged Foot for the golfers. I may have been remembering what Mickelson did on the 18th as the 17th hole. This is the first time that Tiger has played competitively near Pittsburgh. Hopefully eventually Tiger can play close enough that I can see him play.

I don't see many (if any) buys for this tourn happening until Sunday when the earnings are added. I've played Pinehurst #2 4 times and those greens were/are treacherous. These at Oakmont look even more difficult...good luck guys....IMHO there is NO WAY anyone will finish at par or better when this is over.

Tiger was just ever so slightly off today. [Sunday] Tiger had a chance on the 18th hole to get a birdie. Tiger got close to the hole but it did not go in.
Congratulations to Argentinian golfer Angel Cabrera on his first P.G.A tour victory that just happens to be the U.S. Open at Oakmont Pennsylvania.
