Default dvd

Recently....a friend has sent me a pile of AFL videos from Australia.

My dvd thingy on cpu, does not pick up anything on them.

so...I am off to buy a dvd player that will play these Australian dvd's???
I do not want to order a dvd player from Australia...as it wont play American dvd's, I am sure. There must be a way around this nonsense.

Any help or advise would be appreciated.
