Golfer throws playoff hole so opponent could win
OK, I didn't look up a link, just listening to Mike and Mike this morning and they're discussing this story....
In some college tournament, two players are playing a playoff hole....a sophomore whose team had already clinched a spot (and therefore HE had already clinched a spot) in nationals is playing a senior who had never made nationals and hadn't clinched a spot (his team hadn't clinched a spot). The sophomore deliberately knocked his drive on the playoff hole well out of bounds and admitted later he did it because he wanted the senior to get his chance at nationals. Right, wrong, what?

Wrong. I assume by him making it, some other guy who wasn't involved got knocked out. Did the soph know anything about the guy now out?

nice gesture but i'm gonna go with bballjer on this one.
his heart was in the right place, but it kind of cheapens the accomplishment (making it to nationals) and might have screwed someone else out of a chance like bballjer said.

From what I read, no other golfer was effected by this gesture....simply one more kid making the nationals.....my bad for not saying that upfront
My take is......if the kid wanted to do it, he could have done it far less obviously (say, missing a putt) and not made it known what he was trying to do. The discussion on Mike and Mike continued to talk about other things....like the injured UConn women's basketball player a few years ago who was allowed to score a freebie basket to break the scoring record.............and the Michael Strahan freebie when Favre basically laid down in front of him to allow him to break the season sacks record. I was seriously annoyed when Golic blasted this kid and the golf thing, but thought the Strahan thing was OK

I have mixed emotions about this. I feel that he should have been less obvious and kept his mouth shut....that would be a gentleman. Golf is the only game that players police themselves and being honest is of the utmost importance. B. Davis recently lost his chance in overtime to win a tournament due to his honesty...it cost him quite a chunk of change. As Ken said.... this kid's heart was in the right place.....but he was outside the sp[irit of the game with this decision.

Yea this was poor sports to me. I was down on Favre but the guy was coming right at him. He could of thrown it away but would NOT of alluded him. In that sense conceding the inevitible and Favre's relationship with DLs I gave him a pass. If a Cowboy fan can give a Packer a pass....
But in golf it is a gentleman's game. They are soooo honorable they call penalties on themselves. So this was not honorable. Could u see Manu call flops on himself? He would explode. Sorry I cant help myself!

IMO, it's just WRONG. It's INTENTIONALLY throwing a game, plain and simple.

I guess the reason it doesn't bother me is that....the ONLY thing that happened as a result was...the other kid gets to play in nationals.....which, by the way, he would have ANYway if he'd won that hole fair and square.
This wasn't playing for a win it was just playing for a spot....and noone LOST a spot because this happened.
