I am sure 29 other teams would like to have multiple Johan Santanas also.
Unfortunately Twins fans better enjoy it while they can. There are several reason why I say this. The Twins could have just two players taking up between 25%-33% of the teams payroll. There are consequences though. This would mean that there is almost no way that the Twins will be able to keep Hunter, Nathan, and even Liriano for that matter over the next few seasons. Talk about a darned if you do or darned if you don't situation with regards to trading Johan. There is one other situation that could come into play next season around the trade deadline. What if the Twins are close to the playoffs but they think there is no way we will be able to pay what Johan wants. What do the Twins do in that type of situation? Unfortunately I think Storm's idea last year to trade Johan and get something in return for him is exactly what is going to happen.

I think it makes the most sense. he will likely be a $200 million dollar pitcher. And the Twins can NO way afford that. Especially with a new stadium. |

I can see the Twins paying him.... Gotta fill those seats... Best way to that is lock up Johan and Nathan...
And when the time comes get Liriano...

Maybe the new stadium will produce enough revenue to keep him.

a good reason to work out an extension now.....before he gets REAL expensive.........but yes, the hope is the new stadium will allow the Twins to increase the payroll numbers...

have to deal with the land issue before we build it i agree. But its high risk. Lets say you bank on that theory. The team tanks, attendance sucks and boom...you are screwed by a long term guarnteed $200 mil contract. Hey, dont get me wrong, I would LOVE for the twins to sign him and keep him forever. But remember Liriano...you trade Santana, get some VERY good players for him and then sign Liriano LT after next season...I'm just saying... |

You get the deal done... ASAP. The Dollar keeps going up the longer the Twins wait...
Besides... I think Johan will be a 7yr/150 million type of player... That can feed his family. And if the Twins tank - and they canoot support this contract... Its not like it will be that HARD to trade him... Just might not get the return on him like you would get now or next year.
