.400, What does it really mean?
Its not even the all star break and many things could change. Chipper could end up batting .350 for the year and thus a mute point but what does batting .400 really mean?
Would he be considered one of the best hitters ever? Possibly just a really great year? Does it make him a sure fire HOF'er? He would become one of only 2 people to Bat .400 since 1925 (Rogers Hornsby 1922 .401 & 1924 .424 and Ted Williams 1941 .406). You could also throw in Ty Cobb who did it 3 times once in 1911 again in 1912 and again in 1922. Its one of the longest standing milestones in baseball and no one has really even come close since 1999 when Larry Walker hit .379. Prior to this year Chipper was has had an excellent career. Possibly even already a HOF'er but IMO a longshot. What would .400 really do for his career and future? |

I think it means everything. If he hit .400 for one season and didn't play much longer than sure, it shouldn't mean much. But to put together the career he has and then add a benchmark like hitting .400, I say it would cement his enshrinement in the hall of fame. Plus, he has time to yet accomplish even more. Where will his career average end up. How many career homers.
